Wildlife and Nature

wildlife.jpgKids living in Brighton are lucky to have so many places nearby where they can experience and enjoy the wonders of wildlife and nature.  There is so much kids can learn from getting close to nature, and they enjoy being outdoors, exploring wildlife.   Fortunately there are many places to visit that aim to conserve different forms of wildlife. The following nature reserves, centres, parks and woods, which are either in Brighton or close by, welcome visitors both adults and children alike, and provide a child friendly environment. 

Arundel Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre

ARUNDEL

A specialist wetland conservation centre owned by The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust.  It provides a home to a variety of wildlife, including ducks, geese and swans, and is a fun and interesting place to learn about nature.  Café, gift shop, picnic area.

Bedelands Farm and Nature Reserve

BURGESS HILL

This reserve has 80 acres of woodland and ancient meadows and ponds in which to walk around and discover the wildlife.

Bentley Wildfowl and Motor Museum

Nr LEWES

Over 1000 swans, geese and ducks as well as veteran, Edwardian and vintage cars and motorcycles can be found at this stunning stately home.   An interactive trail makes learning about the wildlife fun. Adventure playground, picnic area, café, gift shop.

Buchan Country Park

Nr CRAWLEY

Just two miles from Crawley this country park, made up of 170 acres of woodland, heath and meadow is an ideal place for walking and taking in the wildlife.  Special events and activities for children take place throughout the year.

Goffs Park

SOUTHGATE, Nr CRAWLEY

This 50 acres of open parkland and lakes was awarded The Green Flag Award in 2008.  As well as a walk through the woodlands, children can enjoy the play area, a pitch and putt course and a miniature railway.  Refreshments and toilets.  Free parking.

Malling Down

LEWES

Within walking distance of Lewes town centre, this grassland is home to many rare flowers and butterflies.  Walk to the top of the chalk hills to take in the fantastic views.

Railway Land

LEWES

This Local Nature Reserve is set on the edge of the River Ouse.  Comprising 25 acres of woodland, grassland and ponds it is home to many forms of wildlife.  Dozens of different birds and several species of butterflies, moths, dragonflies and grasshoppers, plus the numerous wild plants that have been spotted, make this a wonderful place to explore with kids.

Access to the Railway Land is via Railway Lane (BN7 2AQ)

There is a pay and display car park next to Railway Lane.

Southerham

LEWES

Right next to Malling Down, Southerham is set in a working livestock farm.  South-facing chalk slopes with wild flowers, butterflies and farmland birds make this a very attractive nature reserve.

Southwater Country Park

Nr HORSHAM

This 90 acres of country park offers an adventure play area, sailing and canoeing on the lake and a wildlife area which has encouraged various butterflies, birds and lizards.  There is a visitor centre and café.  Look out for children's activities provided throughout the year.

Stoneywish Nature Reserve

DITCHLING, Nr BRIGHTON

A friendly family run 50 acres of wetlands, meadows and woodland, home to wildlife as well as farm animals.  Large play area and open space to have a picnic. Children's nature corner, shop and visitor centre.

Wilderness Wood

Nr UCKFIELD

‘A unique family-run working woodland park in the beautiful hills of the Sussex High Weald'.  Open all year round this is a great place for kids to explore and run around.  There is an adventure play area as well as woodland trails.  Hot and cold refreshments are available from the barn.
